Thank You Campton Hills!

Who is Janet Burson?

Janet and her husband discovered the hidden semi-rural gem of Campton Hills in 2015 and instantly fell in love with its unique blend of horse farms, homesteads, Open Space, and neighborhoods like Fox Mill and Deer Run Creek. She has two grown children, grandsons and a third grandchild on the way. With a successful entrepreneurial background and a passion for preserving the special character of Campton Hills, Janet is a great candidate for the job.

After years of hard work and travel, I finally found a piece of paradise in Campton Hills. Our community boasts a diverse array of neighborhoods, from charming horse farms and homesteads to sprawling Open Space areas and upscale HOA communities – all of them wonderful!

The area is so unique, and we cherish that. There are countless average suburbs surrounding us. I want Campton Hills to remain special for generations to come.

Janet’s Vision

  • Communicate: Make it easier to know what’s happening in the Village and strengthen the communication links between the Village President, employees, residents, and Trustees.
  • Conserve: Let’s preserve and cherish the unique character of Campton Hills. Our community can lead the way, showcasing our idyllic lifestyle and adding even more value to our properties.
  • Engage: Encourage community engagement in shaping the future of Campton Hills. Empower residents to drive change and ensure decisions reflect the collective voice and vision of the community.
  • Improve: We can improve access to complete and accurate information by improving our technology and digital literacy. We don’t need to approach modern digital tools with fear and skepticism.
  • Maintain: Ensure our roads and infrastructure are maintained and preserved, keeping Campton Hills one of Illinois’s safest and most well-maintained communities. Foster strong partnerships with other government units.

Janet Thinks Communication Is Key

“I learned a simple rule in business long ago: If the person I’m trying to explain something to doesn’t get it, I missed the mark communicating. Let’s develop that attitude at Village Hall.”

Under the current administration, transparency and communication are lacking. Janet is committed to working with the Board to ensure the village effectively communicates with residents. No one wants to feel left in the dark about important decisions like zoning changes or costly renovations – see what Janet has to say on Facebook.

Clear and Transparent

The village should make it easy for residents to stay informed, not hide important information in vague agendas. Janet will strive for clear and transparent communication through newsletters, the website, and social media. Currently, decisions are made behind closed doors, and residents are only invited to comment on decisions already made.

Join the Conversation Online

Janet understands that technology has made communication easier and more accessible. That’s why she supports using online meeting and video platforms like Zoom, Teams and YouTube and will work to ensure the Village is accessible through social media. The current administration has dropped online meetings and is not present on social media, leaving many residents feeling disconnected. Janet will work to change that.

Revitalize Communication

Janet believes that by empowering residents to participate in the process of creating change, they’ll be more likely to accept it. Currently, residents only have the chance to voice their opinions on a finished product. However, Janet is determined to bring a new level of transparency and engagement to the Village by ensuring residents have a meaningful opportunity to establish the need and shape the solution. Improving communication will be a top priority for Janet, creating a brighter future for everyone in the community.

Communicate Like You Want To Be Understood!

Janet Wants To Conserve Our Community

Janet believes in embracing the rural charm of Campton Hills. Why change how we’ve been doing things for so long, especially when the rest of the world is following our lead? Let’s maintain our unique way of life!

For those who enjoy backyard farming, small-scale homesteading, or simply keeping animals on their property, Janet wants to ensure that these practices remain unchanged. She doesn’t want residents to be burdened by additional permits, variances, special use requirements, or unnecessary regulations.

Preserve Our Character

Campton Hills has a rich history of preserving, conserving, and maintaining its rural character. This was always the goal from the Preserve Campton movement to the grass-roots incorporation of the Village in 2007. Janet will work to ensure that this vision remains at the forefront of all decision-making.

Balancing Rural and Suburban Life

Janet believes in balancing the needs of all residents, whether they live in a more rural or suburban setting. From the largest HOAs in the area, like Fox Mill, to those who live on more rural parcels, every resident deserves to have their land use practices respected.

Keep The Village In Its Lane

Campton Hills is in danger of losing its unique charm and character. Janet will work to restore the harmony of the community by simplifying and amending the recently passed Zoning Ordinance, which has faced strong opposition from the community. She will strive to keep the Village in its lane, ensuring that it does not interfere with established land use practices.

Stop Micromanaging Residents!

Empower Our Community to Lead Change

It’s time for our community to take the wheel and drive change that affects us all, like the zoning ordinance. No more settling for just being notified of changes beyond our control.

We’ve already accomplished so much in creating the Village of Campton Hills from nothing but determination and hard work. Let’s continue that legacy.

Embracing Positive Change

Some updates and modifications have been necessary to the Village’s plans, ordinances, and resolutions over the years. Sometimes, we need to align with other government entities, and sometimes, we need to adapt to changes around us.

The Community Should Lead the Way

Significant changes to Village ordinances and policies that impact all of us should come from the community, not just a select few in Village Hall. Just because some Trustees listen to the “professionals” doesn’t mean it’s the best approach. We have a rich community of talented professionals here. We have good insight into our community and deserve a say in it.

Janet is a Strong Advocate for Our Community

Current President Mike Tyrrell’s priorities don’t align with the preferences of our community. Instead of submitting to him and the incumbent trustees, let’s place our confidence in Janet and the other fresh faces running this year. She is committed to accurately representing your needs and ensuring that your perspectives are considered.

Harness the Power of Campton Hills Residents!

Janet Wants To Modernize Village Tech

Transparency is built on a foundation of complete and accurate data. Janet will work to modernize Village technology and document publishing practices.

FOIA requests are driven by missing information. Virtually the entire record of Village business is available to the public. Many municipalities publish much more than required to reduce FOIA requests. This saves them time and money.

Cleanup The Published Record

It is important that all published documents be correct and complete. The Village website cannot be a moving target. We need to implement a document index and a change log. I will fall on the side of more disclosure. These steps will reduce FOIA requests, save the Village time, money and focus, and serve the community better!

A Better Website Comes From Better Process

Today, the Village conducts its business and then, as a separate matter, decides what to publish on the website and how to do it. However, simple, off-the-shelf technology tools are available to maintain and synchronize a digital document library with the website. Publishing and making the information widely available to the public can be a by-product of storing and organizing the documents – without spending a fortune.

Janet Has The Experience To Modernize Our Tech

Janet developed digital solutions at the Chicago Stock Exchange and collaborated with others to found and build several other companies, including a software company, a leading Internet provider, and a technology business servicing major pop/rock/country music tours, events and venues. Janet has expertise in a broad range of digital technology and will work to ensure the Village makes forward-looking technology decisions.

Janet’s Focus on Village Maintenance

With so much attention given to the zoning ordinance and Village Hall renovation, the importance of short-term and long-term maintenance needs can be neglected.

Current Village President Mike Tyrrell’s decision to walk away from negotiations with Campton Township last summer resulted in a lapse of road maintenance and other services for over a month. This left a negative mark on our Village. Janet recognizes the importance of better relationships with other government agencies to provide vital municipal services to our community.

Plan Now For Future Shortfalls

Funding from the state increased in 2021-2023. Funding is projected to go down. For many years, road maintenance was deferred and limited to about 2 miles/year. The Village committed to 4 miles in 2022 but did not complete the work and carried over the funds for it. This means that 8 miles of the road must be repaved in 2023 to keep up the new 4/year pace. Janet will work to plan for the unreimbursed cost of this work.

Maintenance for a Thriving Village!

Maintenance and improvements are becoming increasingly pressing with many of our village’s roads and subdivisions aging. The cost of work on Village roads is already in the millions, and issues such as stormwater remediation still need to be addressed. Janet is dedicated to caring for our Village, just as we care for our own homes.
